9 45 Sergeant Buzfuz
South London's Sergeant Buzfuz celebrate the release of 4 track “Humble Pie EP” (Blang62). The septet have recorded three 6Music live sessions.

" a clear influence of late 60s folk psychedelia " (R2) "imagine if Billy Bragg and the Beatles collaborated " (Fatea) "the album Ray Davies has been trying to make for the last forty years" (Russ Chandler, Walthamstow Folk Club) "one of the freshest and most original records out now, reminds me a bit of the Kinks" (Radio Free Americana) “Absolutely hooked on it" (Ian Rankin, novelist) “now that I do believe is what they call a pop tune” (Marc Riley, 6Music)
www.sergeantbuzfuz.com

9 00 The Cold Spells
The Cold Spells were formed in a lay-by on the East London/Essex border. Kitchen-sink ballads wheeze from an old, battered harmonium and fuse with crooked guitars and forgotten beats. Their songs are modern laments filtered through electricity and concrete.

8 15 Ashley Reaks
Expect the unexpected from art-pop maverick Ashley Reaks and his postcards from the edge of sanity. A collision of pop melody, free noise, confrontational collage, poetry and unhinged comedy.

"incomparable... a man who often borders on genius" (Louder Than War) "flaunts the kind of maddening genius usually reserved for Dutch impressionists who puncture their ears" (Pitchfork)

9 45 Sergeant Buzfuz

South London's Sergeant Buzfuz follow last year's critically lauded "Balloons For Thin Linda" with new 4 track “Humble Pie EP”.

Sergeant Buzfuz site

9 00 David Cronenberg's Wife

Tom Mayne sings stories of losers and creeps in a nasal Stockport whine over minimalist drone-pop, angular post-punk guitars and pulsating motorik drumming. Echoes of VU, The Fall, Tom Waits, Link Wray. DCW have recorded two 6Music live sessions for Marc Riley.
"Where genius meets idiocy" (Mark Lamarr)
"peppering their albums with undesirable characters, who Mayne inhabits with unnerving realism." (The Independent) "Mayne goes further than them [Nick Cave & Mark E Smith] in the fearlessness of his lyrics. ... This is proper independent music – in production, distribution and vision." (Sounds XP)

8 15 The Big Faux Fibbers
Pitched somewhere between John Otway, The Bonzos and Brian Cant. The Big Faux Fibbers are led by Monster Raving Loony cabinet member Nigel Knapp (Minister for Lies). Supported by guitarists Michael McDonough-Jones (various 80s acts on El and Cherry Red labels) and Jerry Wigens (London Improvisers Orchestra).

Thee White Dove will be spinning 60s garage and freakbeat vinyl nuggets.

The Ivy House (as The Newlands) was a key venue on the pub rock circuit of the 70s, witnessing shows from Dr Feelgood, Kilburn And The High Roads, The 101ers, Elvis Costello, etc. An attempted buy-out by a property developer in 2012 was thwarted by the local community. It became the UK's first pub to be recognised as an Asset Of Community Value and London's first co-operatively-owned pub.

Blang 66: Atom Brain Monster Rock! Launch Party

Thursday, 21 July 2016 00:00

Thursday July 21st

Blang 66: Atom Brain Monster-Rock!

The Windmill, 22 Blenheim Gardens, Brixton, London SW2 5BZ

Tonight The Windmill is the launch-pad for "Atom Brain Monster-Rock!" The 7" vinyl single (Blang 66) is a lurching blank-eyed swamp thing dripping fuzz and tremelo over your turntable as ex-Spacemen 3 cosmonaut Sterling Roswell AKA Rosco calls from the shadows about Obama keeping Cameron's brain in a pickle jar.

Plus support from upstate New York experimental pop quartet Seth Faergolzia's Multibird and London's wrong-pop pioneers Owen And The Eyeballs.
Any attempt to categorize ROSCO aka Sterling Roswell - the former Spacemen 3 drummer and multi-instrumentalist - runs the risk of misrepresenting a true radical. Artist, musician, poet and producer, Roswell is all of these and more and over the years he has embraced a myriad of artistic forms to great effect.

“Roswell's own songwriting and voice recalls a solar-fried Bobby Gillespie, an artist he no doubt originally influenced with the Spacemen 3. Elsewhere, there's truly psychedelic excursions into outsiderdom which come off like The Seeds mutating ever larger into lysergic-dipped monsters.” - ROUGH TRADE

https://www.facebook.com/sterlingroswellband/

Seth Faergolzia's MULTIBIRD European Tour
Since emerging from New York's antifolk scene at the turn of the millenium with avant-folk loons Dufus, Seth Faergolzia has released over twenty albums and played on bills with The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Animal Collective, Jeffrey Lewis and Moldy Peaches. He currently plays either solo or with his 19 piece ensemble 23 Psaegz or with his new quartet Multibird who back him tonight playing songs from "High Diver", this Autumn's album on Blang and Faergolzia's strongest set of songs yet. Seth's music, singing and performance is in a league of its own. Eccentric, soulful, playful and pioneering.

"The 21st-century equivalent of the Fugs at their finest” (Village Voice)

“I have never heard anything like this before” – Pop Matters

OWEN AND THE EYEBALLS
Theatrical performers and self-styled leaders of the 'wrong-pop' movement, the Eyeballs are internationally acclaimed illustrators Jim Stoten, Nick White, Owen Gildersleeve and Andrew Rae (creator of graphic novel Moonhead And The Music Machine).

10 15 Sterling Roswell Band

The Sterling Roswell Band recently toured with The Jim Jones Revue in the UK and tour the USA in October. Alongside Roswell (guitar) are Claire Harrison (Voltage Controlled Oscillators) and Martin Langshaw (drums and percussion) along with a rotating cast of musicians including Pete Bassman (Spacemen 3 / Darkside). Their space rock storm is pierced with lightning jabs of pop melody.

Praise for last album "The Call Of The Cosmos" (a Rough Trade Album Of The Month): “Baudelaire once wrote ‘music excavates heaven’. Listen to this record and you might just have to agree.” ANDREW WEATHERALL / MOJO “Think Lee Hazelwood produced by Joe Meek – perfectly realized and revealing a commercial side to Roswell previously unheard... viewed through the lens of Syd Barrett and Kevin Ayers” LOIS WILSON/MOJO " a mini-masterpiece" KRIS NEEDS/SHINDIG "A topside full of pulsing spectral tunes and a flipside like a '60s sci-fi soundtrack mixed with 'Echoes' of Pink Floyd. An otherworldly delight!" MARK ELLEN

7 30 Malcolm Kaksois
Finding pathos in the nooks and crannies of everyday life. Never has an existential scream been so uplifting.
http://www.malcolmkaksois.com/

8 15 Scrappy Hood
Ex-slang-slinger of London laureates Milk Kan, Scrappy Hood continues to delight with his sharp observations of the ills and thrills of life in 2015. "A rare breed... clearly has an affinity with Ian Dury (Fred Perry Subculture) "Milk Kan juggle a verbal supremacy all their own" (Whisperin And Hollerin)
www.milkkan.co.uk

9 Thomas Truax
Truax first flew from NYC to play a Blang night at the old 12 Bar in 2002. With his off-kilter romance, skewed post-punk visions and self-made instrument the Hornicator, he was like an entertainer from a Lynch dream sequence. Since then he's invented many new bizarre steam-punk instruments, released a glut of albums (one with Blang), and moved to Germany. Tonight is a rare appearance with only guitar and Hornicator.

9 45 Emily Capell
Emily Capell is influenced by Georgie Fame and The Clash and plays with her band of veteran musicians, The Three Pete Suite. Her debut single for Blang last year brooded with tender menace. Duet single with Milk Kan expected soon. "Lyrics that make half your Clash collection redundant" (Unpeeled) "the artist that Lily Allen wishes she was: alternative, witty, current and fresh" (Sounds XP)
www.emilycapell.com

10 30 Paul Hawkins and The Awkward Silences
The Awkward Silences pump out quirky garage pop, a perfect backdrop for anti-frontman Paul Hawkins. A writer who tackles audacious subject matter with imagination and wit. A consummate entertainer whose contempt for fashion sense, disregard for singing in tune and passionate delivery mixed with unaffected gawky charm are pure punk heroism.  Fourth album "Outsider Pop" is out soon on Blang.

11 15 Eugene Ripper
And finally a late slot from Canadian punk-folk singer Eugene Ripper who is touring Europe with his new "Fast Folk Underground 4.0" album which features Television's Billy Ficca thumping the skins. "Ripper puts spikes back in folk music" (Vancouver Province) "One of Canada's most respected songwriters" (Toronto Star)

Since her mother died when she was thirteen Lucy Joplin has kept a diary of her life of hostels, addictions, motherhood and rock'n'roll.  Members of the TVPs and Papernut Cambridge wrap her observations in a snakeskin stomp.

9 45 Sergeant Buzfuz
Does the new Sgt Buzfuz LP sound like A) Blur (R2)? B) Small Faces (Americana UK)? C) Billy Bragg (Fatea)? D Robyn Hitchcock (Blabber'n'Smoke? E) Kinks (every other review)? or F) none of the above?
www.sergeantbuzfuz.com

10 30 David Cronenberg's Wife

www.davidcronenbergswife.com

11 15 JJ Crash
One of the masterminds behind the Blang label, JJ Crash finds poetry in his back yard as he  sings antifolk tales about the East End diaspora. A bit of Wreckless Eric, a smidgeon of Dan Treacey, a soupcon of Plastic Bertrand.

10 15 Sergeant Buzfuz
Sgt Buzfuz preview songs from sixth album “Balloons For Thin Linda” due in the autumn. An album of modern stories of London and Sheffield about prostitutes, ATOS and their war on the disabled, ghosts, anorexia, fate, knife crime, Irish pubs and not knowing what to believe in the media. Wrapped in a web of folkbeat mandolins, violins, slide guitar, bass and drums.

"Excellent stuff" (Marc Riley, BBC 6)

9 30 Emily Capell
Emily Capell celebrates the release of "Who Killed Smiley Culture?", her debut single for Blang. Straight out of Harrow, Emily takes in musical influences as diverse as Georgie Fame and The Clash, writing modern tales of London with a deftness and articulacy which belie her age. Eg, the tender menace of the single's A side and the snotty protest skiffle of B side “Plastic”. A duet with Milk Kan is due for release later this year.
“Amazing” (Bethan Elfyn, BBC Radio Wales)
“Great tune” (Joey Barton,Tweet - she's QPR and he's a fan)
"lyrics that pretty much make half your Clash collection redundant. It's top f***ing banana" (upcoming Unpeeled review)

8 45 Lucy's Diary
Stories drawn from Lucy Joplin’s diary hammered out in old-skool indie-pop grooves by members of The Television Personalities and David Cronenberg's Wife.

8 00 Trees And The Slipway
Refracting their sound through the psychedelic prisms of Tamworth and Liverpool before heading to London, Stephen, Matthew, Karl and Talya play guitar/Casio comedown anthems for the dispossessed, Kraut-y stompers for the still-flying, and in between, songs about looms, moons, doors in rooms, and more earth(l)y things too.
